The hypervelocity impact facility at Space Research Institute (SRI), Auburn University has recently completed a facility upgrade that permits the impact testing of space materials within the cryogenic and elevated temperature range. Sample temperatures within the range of 40–450 K have been achieved for polymer films. These wide temperature range capabilities add to the facilities current testing experience with impact initiated plasma discharge testing for solar cell arrays. The facility utilizes a plasma drag gun to accelerate a variety simulated micrometeorite materials in the 50–150 μm range to velocities between 5 and 12 km/s. For each test 5–50 particles impact the surface of the target sample within an impact area of approximately 15 cm in diameter. The test chamber can accommodate samples up to a meter wide for ambient and heated tests, and 48 cm for cryogenic samples. The gun and test chambers are evacuated by He cryopumps and dry roughing pumps to produce a clean, oil free environment. Utilizing a streak camera and PMT detection system, the correspondence between individual particle size, speed and impact site can be determined. Standard post-analysis yields: micrographs of each impact site, dimensions of the pertinent impact characteristics, individual particle velocity and size estimates.  相似文献

Water quenching plays an important role in metallurgical and materials manufacturing operations to control both the temperature of the product during processing and its final microstructure. In order to control a water-quench process, the surface heat-transfer coefficient or heat flux must be quantified accurately. A common procedure to do this is to use an inverse heat conduction (IHC) model to estimate the heat-transfer boundary condition (heat flux or heat- transfer coefficient) based on the measured thermal history during the quench operation at a known interior location in the sample. Traditionally, thermocouples (TCs) have been extensively used during quench tests to measure the sample temperature history. This article will examine the effect of the hole used to insert the thermocouple into the sample and its orientation with respect to the quenched surface, on the perturbation in the thermal field around the TC measurement point during water-quench operations characterized by boiling heat transfer. The effect of some other factors on the perturbation of the thermal field at the TC measurement point during water-quench operations such as the diameter of the thermocouple hole, thermocouple distance from the quench surface, sample thermal conductivity, and quench intensity were also investigated. A two-dimensional (2-D) axisymmetric IHC model developed at the University of British Columbia is used to estimate the error in the predicted heat fluxes based on the thermal history measured at the thermocouple measurement point. The study showed, for some quench conditions, that the thermocouple hole must be included in the IHC analysis as an independent body with its own thermophysical and geometrical characteristics. Validation of these model-predicted results was done using water-quench experiments performed on samples of steel and aluminum plates at the University of British Columbia. Using the Biot number (Bi), a simple criterion is developed to determine when the TC hole needs to be included in the heat-transfer analysis.  相似文献

Results from studies using a behavioral high-risk design and approximations to it generally have corroborated the cognitive vulnerability hypothesis of depression, whereas results from remitted depression studies typically have not. Suspecting that design features of previously conducted remitted designs likely precluded them from detecting maladaptive cognitive patterns, the authors conducted a study featuring the remitted design that has been successful in studies of a biological vulnerability for depression. Participants' current depressive symptoms, negative cognitive styles (hopelessness theory), dysfunctional attitudes (Beck's theory), and lifetime prevalence of clinically significant depression were assessed. Participants who had remitted from an episode of clinically significant depression had more negative cognitive styles, but not greater levels of dysfunctional attitudes, than did never depressed individuals. The authors investigated the relationship between stress at initial cancer diagnosis and treatment and subsequent quality of life (QoL). Women (n = 112) randomized to the assessment-only arm of a clinical trial were initially assessed after breast cancer diagnosis and surgery and then reassessed at 4 months (during adjuvant treatment) and 12 months (postadjuvant treatment). There were 3 types of stress measured: number of stressful life events (K. A. Matthews et al., 1997), cancer-related traumatic stress symptoms (M. J. Horowitz, N. Wilner, & W. Alvarez, 1979), and perceived global stress (S. Cohen, T. Kamarck, & R. Mermelstein, 1983). According to prospect theory (A. Tversky & D. Kahneman, 1981), messages advocating a low-risk (i.e., easy, low-cost) behavior are most effective if they stress the benefits of adherence (gain framed), whereas messages advocating a risky behavior are most effective if they stress the costs of nonadherence (loss framed). Although condom use is viewed as a low-risk behavior, it may entail risky interpersonal negotiations. Study 1 (N = 167) compared ratings of condom use messages advocating relational behaviors (e.g., discussing condoms) or health behaviors (e.g., carrying condoms). As predicted, loss-framed relational messages and gain-framed health messages received higher evaluations. Neurogenetic models predict neuropsychological weaknesses in the relatives of children with attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The authors examined executive and regulatory measures in 386 relatives (307 parents, 79 siblings) of children with ADHD combined type, ADHD inattentive type, and controls. Predicted deficits were seen on trailmaking (relatives of ADHD combined type only), stop-signal reaction times (relatives of girls only), and response variability (mothers only) but not on naming or output speed. Effects generally held, even with relatives' ADHD status controlled. A neuropsychologically impaired subgroup of children with ADHD had relatives with clear neuropsychological weaknesses. The authors conclude that a neurogenetic model of ADHD etiology is supportable only for a subset of executive functions and that neuropsychological heterogeneity warrants more examination in ADHD. Data are reported from 3,213 research eyewitnesses confirming that accurate eyewitness identifications from lineups are made faster than are inaccurate identifications. However, consistent with predictions from the recognition and search literatures, the authors did not find support for the "10-12-s rule" in which lineup identifications faster than 10-12 s maximally discriminate between accurate and inaccurate identifications (D. Dunning & S. Perretta, 2002). Instead, the time frame that proved most discriminating was highly variable across experiments, ranging from 5 s to 29 s, and the maximally discriminating time was often unimpressive in its ability to sort accurate from inaccurate identifications. This study examined how response mapping of features within single- and multiple-feature targets affects decision-based processing and attentional capacity demands. Observers judged the presence or absence of 1 or 2 target features within an object either presented alone or with distractors. Judging the presence of 2 features relative to the less discriminable of these features alone was faster (conjunction benefits) when the task-relevant features differed in discriminability and were consistently mapped to responses. Conjunction benefits were attributed to asynchronous decision priming across attended, task-relevant dimensions. A failure to find conjunction benefits for disjunctive conjunctions was attributed to increased memory demands and variable feature-response mapping for 2- versus single-feature targets. Further, attentional demands were similar between single- and 2-feature targets when response mapping, memory demands, and discriminability of the task-relevant features were equated between targets. Broadcast news sources and newspapers provide society with the vast majority of real-time information. Unfortunately, cost efficiencies and real-time pressures demand that producers, editors, and writers select and organize content for stereotypical audiences. In this article we illustrate how content understanding, user modeling, and tailored presentation generation promise personalcasts on demand. Specifically, we report on the design and implementation of a personalized version of a broadcast news understanding system, MITRE’s Broadcast News Navigator (BNN), that tracks and infers user content interests and media preferences. We report on the incorporation of Local Context Analysis to both expand the user’s original query to the most related terms in the corpus, as well as to allow the user to provide interactive feedback to enhance the relevance of selected newsstories. We describe an empirical study of the search for stories on ten topics from a video corpus. By personalizing both the selection of stories and the form in which they are delivered, we provide users with tailored broadcast news. This individual news personalization provides more fine-grained content tailoring than current personalized television program level recommenders and does not rely on externally provided program metadata.  相似文献

Research on Facebook users is often based on small convenience samples and on usage data collected through survey self‐reports. The current research contributes to Facebook user research, as it is based on a large, nationally representative, probability‐based, U.S. sample with Internet usage data collected from meters. Results revealed that 50% of sample members are recent Facebook users. However, within this group, there is wide variation in amount of usage between heavy, medium, and light users. Finally, based on a multivariate analysis, Facebook users are significantly more likely to be women, teens, whites, and adults with at least a high school diploma. These demographic patterns apply to heavy, medium, and light Facebook users.  相似文献
